More Than A Father To Me

w/m by Dennis Wheeler ©2005

So much more than the earthly Father he gave

God is a Father that is with me always

Always loving and carrying a spirit of peace

With his heart open wide he is welcoming me

He is more than a Father to me

He is a friend in the darkness when I can not see

With me in my living there all through my life

I’ll return to his mansion on the day that I die

Hand in hand he walks with me

Through the days of my life

Through the pain and the sorrow

through the blessings and strife

On the days when I’m happy

On the days when I cry

In the darkest of moments

In the brightest of light

He is more than a Father to me

He is a friend in the darkness when I can not see

With me in my living there all through my life

I’ll return to his mansion on the day that I die

When I’m hungry he feeds me

When I’m thirsty a cup

Forgiveness he offers

With no strings attached

Never standing in judgment

Forgiveness his grace

By his only son Jesus

My soul He has saved

He is more than a Father to me

He is a friend in the darkness when I can not see

With me in my living there all through my life

I’ll return to his mansion on the day that I die

He is more than a Father to me

He is a friend in the darkness when I can not see

With me in my living there all through my life

I’ll return to his mansion on the day that I die

I’ll return to his mansion on the day that I die...

More Than A Father To Me
There was a day, once, when I wrote a special song designed to perform at church on Mother's Day. It is on this site and is called "She Prayed For Me". Later that same year, one month later, in fact, came Father's Day. I was expected to write  a similar tribute for Dad's. As I sat and thought about Father's Day, a different Father image came to me. This song reflects that image. Too often our image of God is a strict authoritarian entity. I found God to be more like the mentors he has sent forward throught my life and that it how the image I had in my mind became music.
