SHE PRAYS FOR ME
W/m dennis wheeler© 2005
From the miracle of birth
When she first laid eyes on me
She saw so much more than a baby
She saw all that I could be.
And as the years unfolded
And Life offered challenges
She never drifted far away,
She prayed for me.
She Prayed for me
In the darkness of my nights
She Prayed for me
When I could not see the light
She knew I would remember
All the stories she told to me
I remember Momma praying for me.
There were cookies on the counter
Every time I would come home
If she saw some tears inside my eyes
She’d take my hand to hold.
And as the years unfolded
And life offered challenges
She never drifted far away,
She prayed for me.
She Prayed for me
In the darkness of my nights
She Prayed for me
When I could not see the light
She knew I would remember
All the stories she told to me
I remember Momma praying for me.
From the day of my baptism
To the day that I left home
She called Jesus my companion
And knew it’s His hand I would hold.
And when GOD came to my mother
At that time to take her home,
She never drifted far away
She prays for me.
She prays for me
In the darkness of my nights
She prays for me
From that Kingdom in the light
She knew I would still Remember
All the stories she told to me
Momma’s kneeling down in heaven,
And prays for me.
Repeat chorus
Repeat last line.

So there I was, searching for a song to sing Sunday for Mother's day. There just are not a lot of songs that people are familiar with about Mothers for the sake of Mothers Day. In a moment of desperation I wrote one. It is a compilation of my mother, my Grandmother, and my Aunt Vera. These are all the women who filled the role of "mother" in my growing up. That role of "Mother" often includes many different women for different people. In this "new age" mom can be Dad. For some it may be the mom of a best friend where they spent a lot of time, for some a relative or mentor next door or at school. In the "new age" "mom's role" has been reshaped by care providers, counselors, mentors, relatives, neighbors and many others. In many ways this is a a large change, because the role of Mother has always been a most important task to our created order. In a country of single parents and restructured lifestyles, "mom" can be many different people.
This song, though, is about a central characteristic of what a Mom is to me, that care person who holds concern for you so deeply that prayer becomes the gift and the measure. Enjoy, and may this lyric be meaningful to you, as it is to me.
